Ben Rhydding Gravel Pits Reserve

First visit of the year to Ben,Rhydding Gravel Pits Reserve, dull and overcast but the sun came out later.

On the river there was a Heron ,mallard with young, female Goosander,Swifts and Swallows flying but did not notice any Sand Martins and they usually nest in the banking across the river.

Gravel Pit
The top gravel pit is used for fishing a few Moorhen and Coots on here.

Pink Forget-me-not

This is the top end of the reserve, walk back down the river edge there are small coppice woods of tree and you can hear Tits,Chiffchaff,Chaffing,Blackbird, Robin, etc.
There are open bits of land between the trees that are boggy, great number of wild flowers and during the summer a good place for Dragonfly.

This is the top Gravel pit which is covered in

Yellow Water-lily

Nuphar lutea

There is also a swan nesting on the other side,Dad was in the river.

Also to day watched the Kingfisher fly up and back into the banking, think they could be nesting. There was a Gray Wagtail and Pied Wagtail feeding along the river bank.

Cuckoo calling

Sunday night was a late walk up Burly Moor the weather had been good again to day.

Burly Moor
You can see for miles up here, there was Curlew,Oystercatchers calling.

Standing still looking at the view we realised we could hear a Cuckoo calling maybe two, there was also a Grouse calling, the more you stop and listen the more we could hear.

Farm House

This is the area we could hear the Cuckoo calling from.

On the way back down we watched the lambs playing and i caught sight of a Pheasant in the sun.

Goit Stock Falls

On Saturday we went to Goit Stock Falls at Harden near Bingley. I have never been before and the place was amazing, will be going again.

Goit Stock Falls
Did not get there till about 8 so the light was fading, there was allot of Song Thrush singing in the top of the trees and all you usual woodland birds, wild flowers, and a frog.

Path to the Falls
The walk is well recorded, this is the bridge over the river and at the bottom there is a Mill.

You can just see the mill through the garden, what a place to live.

How crazy is the path, they have put this railing up to help you get down into the bottom were the water fall is. I had gone with my son who wanted to photograph the water fall, the light is good for him at this time, not for me as my camera was finding it to dark. While sitting down and soaking up this wonderful place I noticed the Dipper on the river,I could get very close but the camera said no!

This is the best shot I managed to get.

This is the path that takes you down the river, well that's for another day as it was getting dark.

Flowers at the park in May

As well as the birds, trees and insects i am also interested in the flowers that grow there, some are wild down by the beck and some are left over from when there used to be a big house there which was owned by the mill owner who had mills in Guiseley..

Wow... We over look this flower, how bright and yellow it is... taking a closer look..
